Our strategy
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough is one of the most nature-depleted areas in England. We want to change that by creating a world-class place where nature and people flourish together!
The Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) programme is a national Government initiative designed to set priorities for nature recovery across England, responding to the national biodiversity decline. Natural Cambridgeshire has been asked by the County Council to support the delivery of an LNRS for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, the area already having adopted a ‘Doubling Nature’ ambition.
With your help, together we can create a nature-rich future for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
Our priorities
Statement of Biodiversity Priorities
The Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) is a key component of the Environment Act 2021, aiming to set priorities for nature recovery in the country. Local communities have had a key role, through participation in events and surveys, in setting priorities for nature recovery in the LNRS in their area.
“Local people can help us understand in greater depth the important local habitats and wildlife that need to be treasured and conserved, and identify where we can increase biodiversity and create landscapes more resilient against climate change and other environmental pressures.”
Director of Natural Cambridgeshire Pamela Abbott
We are currently developing our priorities for habitats and species in Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, but will include the following as a minimum:
- A description of biodiversity for the strategy area.
- Opportunities for recovering or enhancing biodiversity in the strategy area.
- Prioritise areas and species for recovering or enhancing biodiversity in the strategy area.
- Identify priorities for recovery or enhancing biodiversity in the strategy area.

Our Investment
How will the strategy help recover nature?
Planning and development
Integration of local nature recovery strategies into the planning system, so that areas of greatest potential for nature recovery can be better reflected in planning decisions.
Environmental Incentives
Help shape the roll out of new Environmental Land Management Schemes, Biodiversity net gain, etc.
Nature-based solutions
Strengthen local ambitions for nature-based solutions to wider environmental issues (Climate Change, flood risk, etc).
Community engagement
Vibrant communities cherishing and taking action for nature in gardens, parks and other communal areas.
