Sarah Smith

Trustee

Born and raised in Cambridgeshire as a farmer’s daughter, Sarah grew up with a love of the Fen landscape. As a Zoology graduate from the University of Nottingham, she discovered a passion for connecting people with nature. For 17 years Sarah has worked in nature conservation in Cambridgeshire for WWT, Wildlife Trust and National Trust; developing her passion for wetlands and engaging local communities. At Wicken Fen she leads the National Trust’s 100-year plan to extend the nature reserve, the ‘Wicken Fen Vision’. Managing one of the last fragments of original fenland coupled with forward-looking plans is an exciting challenge that she is thrilled to share with over 70,000 visitors each year.

Why Sarah supports ‘doubling nature’:
“The Wicken Fen Vision has seen the return of otters, water voles, cranes and marsh harriers; we know that wildlife can return with the right changes. Through Natural Cambridgeshire, organisations are working closer than ever before on a landscape scale to create a wilder future for Cambridgeshire. All of this gives me hope for the future of the landscape I call home.”
